98. The Go-Go’s

Historically speaking, Music of all genres is full of all male bands. Sure, there was the occasional female lead singer or two, but generally, it did not get much further than that. That ceiling was forever broken in 1981, when the Go-Go’s topped the charts becoming the first all female band that wrote their own songs and played their own instruments. Seriously, it took until 1981 for that to happen.   Originally a Punk band, the California quintet shifted their focus to the burgeoning New Wave sound. The move proved to be fruitful as they quickly caught on with listeners who embraced their fun party music which was among the more popular of the first half of the 80’s.
